Puntland is an autonomous republic of federal Somalia, founded in 1993. It is led by Abdiweli Mohamed Ali (président since 2014).
This republic is no longer dependent on the central Somalian government but does not self-proclaim itself independent. This region's gross domestic product is estimated at around 602 US dollars per citizen.
It seems that certain pirates that are active in the Gulf of Aden are based in Puntland harbors. This state has not been spared by the 'Somalian civil war' : ethnic violence, border disputes with Somaliland, al-Shebab jihadists present on the territory...
