Halaib (Egypt/Sudan)

The Halaib triangle is a border zone, spanning an area of about 12000 square miles, that is disputed by Egypt and Sudan. Under the British colonial era, Halaib was administered by Sudan and after independence (1956), it was controlled by a joint Egyptian/Sudanese force.

But when, in 1995, the Egyptian governmant blamed an assasination attempt targeting Hosni Mubarak (1981-2011) on Sudan, Egypt annexed Halaib by force.

Nowadays, the situation remains quite tense, as Sudan still doesn't recognize the annexation of Halaib by Egypt. Relations between Egypt and Sudan deteriorated even more when Saudi Arabia recognized the control of Halaib's shores by Egypt.
